Adding Sweeteners: Nutri-Score 2.0 Labeling for Beverages with SpecPage

Starting January 2026, food manufacturers will only be allowed to use the new calculation method for the Nutri-Score, which was published at the beginning of 2024. In particular, the specifications for sugar, salt, and fiber content are stricter. The result: Many foods and beverages are given a different Nutri-Score, which manufacturers must consider in their processes. This is primarily a task for the software, as the recipe calculation is now different.

Nutri-Score: Nutritional Quality in Color Coding

The Nutri-Score is a food labeling system that indicates the nutritional value of food using a color code from green (A) to red (E). The color code is determined based on a number of points per ingredient. Taking the sugar content of a beverage as an example: At eleven grams of sugar per 100 milliliters, it has the highest sugar score of ten. The total score therefore increases to over ten, and the corresponding beverage receives the red score “E”.

The introduction of Nutri-Score 2.0 offers significant advantages for food manufacturers. It strengthens customer confidence in the products, as the score allows more precise evaluation and labeling of beverages with sweeteners. Manufacturers, in turn, ensure that their food and beverages meet the highest standards in terms of quality and transparency. This also improves competitiveness on the global market.

One more side note: newly produced foods and beverages must always be calculated using the new Nutri-Score. However, there is a transitional period until the end of 2025 for goods already produced or on the market. The aim is to prevent goods or packaging that have already been produced from having to be destroyed.

Compliance Requires Data Management

To make it easier to meet the Nutri-Score requirements, food manufacturers need an appropriately aligned data management system that contains details and information on the ingredients and sweeteners for all products. This task is often performed in the food industry in German-speaking countries by the market-leading Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) software SpecPage from Revalize.

SpecPage is an innovative PLM system developed specifically for the food and beverage industry. It enables the centralized management of data and information throughout the entire product life cycle. This includes the development, manufacture, and marketing of products. SpecPage not only allows companies to standardize and accelerate their internal processes, but also ensure compliance with global regulations.

A central function of SpecPage is the ability to create and manage detailed product specifications. These specifications include all relevant information, such as nutritional value, details of allergens, and lists of ingredients. With the introduction of the “Sweetener” criterion in the new version, SpecPage can now also record and manage information about sweeteners in beverages. This is particularly important for correctly calculating the Nutri-Score.

Automated Calculation of the Nutri-Score

SpecPage automates the calculation and management of the Nutri-Score. All relevant data is contained in a central database. This ensures that all information is correct and up to date, which is crucial for compliance and for communication with consumers. Centralized storage also reduces the effort and risk of errors typically associated with manual processes.
Another advantage of SpecPage is the ability to develop and compare different recipes in parallel. This enables manufacturers to identify the optimal recipes that achieve the desired Nutri-Score. For example, they can test different combinations of ingredients and sweeteners to find the best possible balance between taste and nutritional value.
SpecPage also offers extensive reporting and analysis functions, which manufacturers can use to produce detailed reports on the nutritional composition of their products. These reports are helpful for developing and optimizing products and are also suitable for providing proof of compliance with legal regulations to supervisory authorities.

The integration of the new “Sweetener” criterion in SpecPage and the support for Nutri-Score 2.0 labeling is an important step forward for the food industry.

Manufacturers can meet all requirements, optimize their internal processes, and provide consumers with a sound basis for making their purchasing decisions. Schedule a demo.
